Queen & slim diet pills. Very slow paced. The female lead is annoying. There is only one way this story can end. I bet you can guess the ending from the description of the movie. I find it nonsensical and short sided that these two were made out to be heroes. Don't get me wrong, I had hoped they would've made it. The last scene shows a picture of the two being made into a mural on the side of a building. What? They were not heroes. The more I think about the message, the more I wish I never saw this movie.

I’ve been so psyched to see what a film from her looks like, and am still psyched to see her take on Y: The Last Man next year, but... Matsoukas' visuals are as precise as in her tremendous music video work but applied to exploitation it lacks grit, it's airless, schematic. The provocations of the narrative remain just that; with one vaguely incoherent exception (the riot/sex scene) there's very little here that's confrontational, and it's calculated mainly to reinforce what we already know, what we're already comfortable being (very correctly, but still) angry about. One of this watch list turned out to be the film Queen and Slim directed by Melina Matsukas. Road movie in the American setting. Well, some place here is occupied by criticism of racism. The plot remotely resembles the Green Book (2018) which I sincerely hate.
In fact, everything turned out to be three times more interesting. A black couple, having met in a tinder by returning from the first date, accidentally kills a policeman and goes on the run across half the country, whom he has not met on the way. Somewhere in the background looms the topic of aggressive behavior by American police towards African Americans, but this is felt as a detail of the setting and, as a whole, does not receive proper development.
The more important part - the first boring trip to indie of the director's first full-length film - before that, Melina Matsukas was shooting only music videos. And this is noticeable - the picture is replete with unusual cameraman solutions, geometry in the frame and a ton of various stereotypical "black" music - from blues to modern cloud rap.
